Scientists Focused on Lunar Exploration to Gather at Bowie State

Development of New Technologies Key to Sustained Operations on the Moon

(BOWIE, Md.) – NASA scientists will gather at Bowie State University along with engineers and technology experts from commercial, government, academic and non-profit sectors to assess the latest progress toward developing the key technologies needed to begin exploration of the lunar surface and ultimately, sustained operations on the surface of the moon.

The fall meeting of the Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium (LSIC), set for Nov. 3 – 4, will convene more than 300 partners from their nationwide alliance that provides a central gathering place for information related to lunar surface development. In-person sessions held in the Student Center at BSU will be live streamed to virtual attendees. Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux will welcome and acknowledge the importance of the consortium’s work that includes NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and other entities across the county as well as BSU student interns.

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC®), a premier global Fortune 500® information technology and engineering company, is the conference sponsor and lead that Bowie State partners with for the OMES II contract with NASA Goddard. Since January 2021, eleven BSU computer science students have served as SAIC interns on several projects that support technology development efforts for NASA’s Exploration and In-space Services (NExIS) program, focused on technologies for manufacturing and in-space assembly; and the On-orbit Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing-1 (OSAM-1), a robotics spacecraft for servicing and refueling satellites in orbit.

“Bowie State interns provide valuable support to these important projects, and also help us develop qualified candidates to fill full time positions with our project teams at Goddard,” said Yolanda Tully, SAIC program analyst consultant-small business liaison.

SAIC and LSIC will also jointly host a virtual lunar career and job fair, Nov. 9, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Featured career and employment opportunities include engineering, aerospace, information technology, cyber security, software engineering, and data analytics.
