Events Focus on Ways Individuals & Communities Can Support Environment

(BOWIE, Md.) – Protecting our planet’s health takes on even more importance this year during the COVID-19 pandemic as the Bowie State University community engages in Earth Week 2021 activities, April 19-22. Learn more about all of the planned events at bit.ly/BSUEarthWeek.

The pandemic has highlighted the complex connections between the natural world and human health, underscoring the significance of sustainability efforts to preserve our world. Bowie State’s Earth Week 2021 events, hosted by the BSU Climate Commitment Coordinating Committee (C4), focus on ways that government, industry and individuals can support green practices and policies.

The kick-off event on Monday, April 19 at 1 p.m. will introduce the Prince George’s County climate action plan to residents and the Bowie State University community. The virtual preview of the plan precedes the rollout of the full plan in September 2021. Bowie State has organized this event to engage the public and students in sharing with county officials what matters most to them and shaping the final plan.

For the It’s So Easy Being Green Video Contest, Bowie State students are encouraged to use their creativity in an Instagram video challenge to promote daily, environmentally friendly behaviors outside of recycling. Students must post their videos of 25 seconds or fewer through Monday, April 19 to participate, tagging #easygreen2021 and @bsugreen65. The top three winners will win prizes, and the grand prize winner’s video will be featured on the BSU Green Ambassadors and C4 Instagram page on Wednesday, April 21.

Bowie State partners with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay on two other events – a Public Health Meets Ecosystem Health virtual forum on Tuesday, April 20 from 12-1 p.m. and Stream Clean-up on Thursday, April 22 from 10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The virtual forum focuses on the relationship between your local environment and public health, with local environment and health experts. For the stream clean-up, Bowie State volunteers are asked to register for a 75-minute shift to help clean a local stream in Horsepen Park, along with Alliance staff and seniors living in the Collington Retirement Community. The clean-up location is where BSU students regularly monitor water quality through the university’s ongoing partnership with the Alliance.

Although the Earth Week 2021 events look a little different than in years past, they all support Bowie State’s commitment to sustainability and reversing the effects of climate change.
