LGBTQIA Resource Center
In April 2012, Bowie State University became America's first Historically Black College and University with a LGBTQIA Resource Center.
The LGBTQIA Resource Center fosters an open, safe and inclusive environment for people of all sexualities and gender identities. The LGBTQIA Resource Center has resources for anyone who is interested in learning about LGBT people, issues, and the intersections of race, gender identity/expression, and social class.
The LGBTQIA Resource Center works with faculty, staff and students to increase awareness and affirmation of LGBTQIA individuals to reduce discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In addition, the center collaborates with faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to develop programs to promote knowledge and awareness. Equally important, the LGBTQIA Resource Center facilitates intentional programs and services that assist the university's commitment to inclusion and retention among the LGBT+ community. Signature programs and services include and are not limited to: Safe Space Training, My Pronouns Matter, and Living LBGT+ in Color.
The LGBTQIA Resource Center collaborates with the House of Bowie (Gay-Straight Alliance) at BSU and other organizations on campus to develop programs, workshops, and activities to raise campus awareness about LGBT concerns. The LGBTQIA Resource Center maintains a collection of LGBTQIA resource materials (books and pamphlets) for use by the University community.
