The Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers hosts two annual speaker programs focused on Black male educators and students. The Black Male Teacher Speaker Series is an annual program focused on solutions to address the recruitment, retention, development, support, and empowerment of Black male educators and leaders. The Black Boys and Men Speaker Series is an annual program focused on solutions to Black boys and men's academic and social support and development in K-12 schools, school systems, mentoring programs, and universities. The speaker series seeks to bridge research, theory, and practice and offer attendees with culturally grounded, asset, and strength-based perspectives for Black boys, Black men, Black male educators, and leaders. The programs also provide a platform to share updates on the CRM-BMST’s work and develop new partnerships.
The Educational Ecosystem That Impacts the Well-being of Black Male Students in Education

The Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers (CRM-BMST) at Bowie State University welcomes families, students, educators, school leaders, faculty, the community, and other stakeholders to our annual Black Men and Boys Speaker Series program.
It is well documented in the research literature, and observed within family, educational and community settings that Black boys and men excel and achieve when supported by an ecosystem of caring individuals operating from strength and asset-based perspectives. The pandemic has disrupted the ecosystems that support Black boys and men in multiple settings and there is a need for us to strengthen them. The theme for this year’s program is the educational ecosystem that impact the well-being of Black male students in education.
The program will feature a keynote from Dr. James L. Moore III, Assistant Director for the Education and Human Resources Directorate for the National Science Foundation. To bridge research, theory, and practice, Dr. Moore and the panel will engage in discussion regarding the mental health and socio-emotional well-being of Black male students throughout the K-12 pipeline and collegiate levels. Panelists will engage questions from the audience following the keynote.

The program will feature a keynote from Dr. James L. Moore III, Assistant Director for the Education and Human Resources Directorate for the National Science Foundation. Before this appointment, Dr. Moore served as Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and was also the EHE Distinguished Professor of Urban Education in the College of Education and Human Ecology at The Ohio University. He was the inaugural executive director of the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male. Dr. Moore is an internationally recognized scholar whose research agenda focuses on: (a) how educational professionals, such as school counselors, influence the educational/career aspirations and school experiences of students of color (particularly African American males); (b) sociocultural, familial, school, and community factors that support, enhance, and impede academic outcomes for preK-20 African American students (e.g., elementary, secondary, and postsecondary); (c) recruitment and retention issues of students of color, particularly African Americans, in preK-12 gifted education and those high-potential college students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors; and (d) social, emotional, and psychological consequences of racial oppression for African American males and other people of color in various domains in society (e.g., education, counseling, workplace, athletics, etc.)
The Pivotal Role of Black Women in the Movement for Black Male Educators

The Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers (CRM-BMST) at Bowie State University hosts the annual Black Male Teacher Speaker Series program.This year’s program theme is The Pivotal Role of Black Women in the Movement for Black Male Educators. The CRM-BMST pays homage to Black women contributors to the Black male educator movement. The role and contributions of Black women in the movement to increase, recruit, retain, develop, and research Black male educators have rarely been discussed. Black women have been devalued in the Black male educator movement but have made many significant contributions. During the program, the CRM-BMST pays homage to Black women contributors to the Black male educator movement. It also features an important conversation with Black women about their pivotal roles and contributions.
Progress Report: an Exclusive Album Release

The Center for Research and Mentoring of Black Male Students and Teachers (CRM-BMST) at Bowie State University presents the Progress Report, an exclusive album release and listening session featuring MRCRTR.
The Progress Report is a six-year journey of MRCTR's writing, creating, and learning about himself and how he serves students through the voice of hip-hop.
During the listening party, guests will enjoy the music of MRCRTR, catered food, good conversations, fellowship, and networking. The event will feature live performances by MRCRTR. The guests will have the opportunity to share their love of HIP-HOP, MRCRTR music, and stories. MRCRTR has performed his music at many venues, including the Queens College/NYC MEN Cypher.
MRCRTR has been a significant supporter of the CRM-BMST. He was one of the first guest presenters for the CRM-BMST Black Male Teachers College Program, where he led a session on hip-hop and performed some of his music for the scholars. MRCRTR has been a founding and faithful member of the Black Male Teacher Initiative Consortium. He was also a panelist for the CRM-BMST Black Male Teacher Speakers program focused on Black Male Educators' Pedagogical Excellence. MRCRTR was a panelist for the CRM-BMST Black Boys and Men Speaker Series focused on Families of Black male students. At the program, MRCRTR performed some of his music live.
Black Male Speaker Series: The Mathematical Brotherhood

This fall, Black Boys and Men Speaker series will feature Dr. Christopher C. Jett, the author of the book "Black Male Success in Higher Education: How the Mathematical Brotherhood Empowers a Collegiate Community to Thrive." The book examines 16 Black male mathematics majors at Morehouse College, called the “Mathematical Brotherhood.” The CRM-BMST will host a virtual program featuring a keynote address from Dr. Jett, who will share the experiences and voices of 16 Black male mathematics majors at Morehouse College and the mathematical brotherhood they formed through the lens of Black masculinity and critical race theory. He will share how Morehouse empowers Black male students and how the men navigate and manage ongoing racial challenges, mathematical spaces, and society. Dr. Jett will provide recommendations to families, educators, policymakers, and researchers to improve Black boys’ and men’s mathematics achievement and academic outcomes.
The program will feature a panel of Black male professors and secondary teachers of mathematics and Black male students throughout the secondary and collegiate mathematics pipeline who will respond to Dr. Jett’s keynote and discuss how we create mathematical brotherhoods and asset-based approaches to working with Black male students throughout the secondary, community college, and 4-year institution pipeline.
